Accompanied by a century of eventful developments in China’s higher education in mining, the discipline of geology has gone through nearly one hundred years. In the 1930s, the distinguished geologist Weng Wenhao served as the Executive Board Director of the Jiaozuo Institute of Technology (the predecessor of China University of Mining and Technology), and renowned geologists such as Zhang Bosheng and Zhang Mingshao once taught at the university. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, under the leadership of noted geologist Professor He Jie, Academician Han Dexin, and Professor Gao Wentai, the discipline of geology has grown and flourished through the efforts and dedication of several generations. It became one of the first batch of national key disciplines, doctoral degree authorization units, and postdoctoral research stations in China, and was among the first in the nation to initiate the "Project 211" key discipline construction and the "Project 985 Advantage Discipline Innovation Platform" construction.
Currently, the College has one national key discipline (Mineral Prospecting and Exploration), one Jiangsu Provincial key discipline (Earth Detection Information and Technology), and three first-level doctoral degree authorization disciplines: Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Geology, and Geophysics. Geological Resources and Geological Engineering and Geology are postdoctoral research station disciplines. In addition, there are two first-level master’s degree authorization disciplines: Hydraulic Engineering and Geography, as well as two engineering doctoral/master’s authorization fields: Geological Engineering and Hydraulic Engineering. The disciplines span both engineering and science, covering five first-level disciplines: Geological Resources and Geological Engineering, Geology, Geography, Geophysics, and Hydraulic Engineering. At present, a well-structured disciplinary layout has been established, featuring a relatively comprehensive range of geoscience disciplines, distinct engineering characteristics, and coordinated development of both engineering and science.
