1. Historical Evolution

The Department of Geology Engineering of China University of Mining and Technology was formed by the merger of the original Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology and Prospecting Engineering programs of the university. The Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology program was established in 1980, and the Prospecting Engineering program was established in 1985. In 2003, the Institute of Geology Engineering and Geological Disaster Prevention was established, and in 2007, it was adjusted to the Institute of Coal Mine Engineering Geology. In 2017, it was renamed the Department of Geology Engineering.

2. Research Directions and Academic Backbone

The research directions include: geological disaster assessment and prevention, coal mine engineering geology, mine water hazards, water and sand burst prevention, geotechnical engineering investigation technology, underground engineering chemical grouting engineering design and construction, environmental engineering geology, mining-induced ground movement and soil deformation, trenchless technology and directional drilling, etc. After years of development, a teaching team with a reasonable age, educational background, and academic degree structure, high academic level, strong innovation ability, and a spirit of dedication has been formed. There are currently 7 professors, 9 associate professors, 1 senior laboratory technician, and 2 lecturers.

3. Talent Cultivation Objectives

The Department of Geology Engineering undertakes the teaching and research work of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Geology Engineering. It aims to cultivate well-rounded talents with a broad foundation, strong ability, and high quality, who have a sense of historical mission, social responsibility, and international vision, are innovative and practical, and adhere to the spirit of "diligent learning and practical action, seeking truth and innovation", and can contribute to the prosperity of the country and the progress of society. The knowledge and abilities that students should possess upon graduation include: adapting to the needs of socialist modernization, systematically mastering the basic theories, methods, and skills of geology, engineering geology, and rock and soil drilling engineering, receiving engineering geology training, having a high level of foreign language and computer skills, having good scientific thinking, innovative awareness, and strong practical working ability, and being able to use modern technical means and methods to engage in research, production, and management in engineering geology investigation, foundation engineering design and construction, rock and soil drilling engineering, and geological disaster prevention. The training objectives of this major are clear, appropriate, and feasible, meeting the needs of society for talent cultivation, having a clear professional orientation, and conforming to the overall development plan of the university.
