Professional Overview

The major originated from the Coalfield Geophysical Exploration program established by the former Beijing Mining Institute in 1959, and it was the only university in the original coal system to cultivate geophysical talents. After adjustments, it began to recruit undergraduate students in Geophysics in 2005 and was rated as a brand major in Jiangsu Province in 2012. The discipline began to recruit master's degree students in 1984. In 1993, it was approved as a master's degree authorization point for "Applied Geophysics". In 1998, it was approved as a doctoral degree authorization point for "Earth Exploration and Information Technology" and a key construction discipline of the "211 Project". In 2006, it was rated as a key discipline of Jiangsu Province. In 2009, it became a secondary discipline of the national first-level key discipline cultivation point. In 2003, it was approved as a master's degree authorization point for "Solid Earth Physics" in the field of science, forming the current situation where science and engineering are equally emphasized.

The discipline has a first-class teaching staff. Currently, there are 20 full-time teachers, 19 of whom have doctoral degrees. Among them, there are 6 doctoral supervisors and 14 master's supervisors, including one person with the title of Jiangsu Province "333 Talent" (second level) and one person selected for the "Thousand Talents Program". In the past five years, the discipline has undertaken 169 scientific research projects, including national major science and technology special projects, with a total funding of 90.169 million yuan. It has won more than 10 provincial and ministerial-level or above scientific and technological awards, published nearly 100 SCI and EI indexed papers, and published 6 monographs.
