The Department of Hydrology and Water Resources is based on the first-level disciplines of water conservancy engineering and geological resources and geological engineering, undertaking the cultivation and teaching and research work of undergraduate, master's and doctoral students in the related specialties of hydrology and water resources engineering and groundwater science and engineering.

China University of Mining and Technology began to recruit undergraduate students in the "Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology" major in 1980. In 1990, "Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology" was approved as a master's degree authorization point. In 1998, it was merged with the "Land Hydrology" major to form the "Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering" undergraduate major. In 2003, with the approval of the Ministry of Education, the "Hydrology and Water Resources" master's degree point was established and included in the enrollment plan of China University of Mining and Technology. In 2008, the "Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering" undergraduate major was approved as a brand major of Jiangsu Province. In 2010, it was approved as a master's degree authorization point for the first-level discipline of "Water Conservancy Engineering". In 2012, a secondary discipline doctoral point for "Groundwater Science and Engineering" was established.

The Department of Hydrology and Water Resources currently has 17 teachers, including 4 professors and 6 associate professors, 14 of whom have doctoral degrees. He has presided over two national 973 Program projects, one national "Seventh Five-Year Plan" science and technology project, one key project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 15 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, one key project of the Ministry of Education, and three projects of the Jiangsu Provincial Natural Science Foundation. He has won two second prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and over 20 provincial and ministerial-level science and technology progress awards. He has published nine monographs, three textbooks, and over 300 academic papers, among which more than 50 have been indexed by SCI and over 100 by EI.

The Department of Hydrology and Water Resources, relying on the "State Key Laboratory of Coal Resources and Safe Mining", "State Key Laboratory of Geomechanics and Geotechnical Engineering", the "National Development and Reform Commission Laboratory for Basic Research on Mine Water Hazard Prevention and Control", and the Analytical and Testing Center of China University of Mining and Technology, as well as the Teaching and Experiment Center of the School of Resources and Geosciences of China University of Mining and Technology, has advanced experimental facilities and research conditions. It focuses on the basic theory and application research in the field of hydrology and water resources in response to national needs, and has formed several research directions with the notable feature of mine water hazard prevention and control, achieving a number of landmark achievements. The main research directions are:

(1) Mine water hazard prevention and control; (2) Water resources evaluation and management; (3) Water environment and water ecology; (4) Simulation and prediction of hydrological physical processes; (5) Environmental change and water security; (6) Engineering hydrogeology; (7) Groundwater numerical simulation.
